Documentary Filmmaker and Educator

Jillian Godshall

Jillian Godshall is a documentary filmmaker and educator originally from Austin, TX. Now based in Louisiana, her work shines a light on issues related to human migration, fragile ecosystems, and mental health. The first film she produced, “Yakona”, an experimental documentary about the San Marcos River, won the Audience Choice Award at SXSW in 2014 and was distributed by Sundance Artist Services. She won a Lonestar Emmy for the documentary series she produced called “Stories of the Mind” which was distributed on PBS stations nationwide. A short documentary she produced, “The Boatman”, was distributed by Time Magazine and in 2016 was chosen as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Her directorial debut, “The Day They Took My Father,” is a short documentary that premiered at the New Orleans Film Festival and was included in Antigravity Magazine’s Best of the Fest. She is a founding member of All Ya’ll Southern Documentary Filmmakers Collective and was included in the 2020 cohort of the Southern Producer’s Lab. She has worked at NOVAC since 2015 where she makes documentary projects and teaches youth media.
